Bones

Bone is composed of a matrix of strands of collogen. Most have a central cavity filled with marrow.
Bone can be used to replace or reconstruct bone destroyed by tumors, trauma and infection, saving limbs that would otherwise have to be amputated.

An estimated three quarters of a million bone grafts are done every year. Most frequently, the iliac crests and the long bones of the legs are used.

Prosthetic devices may be used to replace the removed bone, so bone donation need not interfere with an open casket funeral.
